Call Box and Megapixel Camera Integration for Enhanced Campus Security

The security professionals responsible for schools, colleges and corporate campuses are increasingly seeking improved video surveillance. In new industry research, "Anixter and Arecont Vision: Inside the Minds of Campus Security Professionals Survey," respondents identified their chief areas of concern and the challenges that they face in addressing them. A combination of existing infrastructure with new video surveillance technology provides the solution to many of their identified needs.

The survey revealed that many schools and colleges are operating in a more security-conscious environment than in the past. An overwhelming 49 percent of respondents indicated that campus video surveillance made students feel safer, while only 9 percent believed that video surveillance was an invasion of their privacy. The most difficult areas on campus for security are the perimeter (55 percent), parking areas (44 percent) and stadiums (41 percent) according to respondents. Eighty-four percent also identified increased video surveillance as their preferred security solution to address these challenges. Many schools, colleges and corporate campuses use emergency call boxes for sidewalks, pathways, quads, parking lots and other spaces that cannot always be patrolled. The call box provides a quick connection to security officers, but the survey revealed that only 4 percent were fully integrated with video.

Campus security has also been enhanced with the widespread deployment of IP megapixel surveillance cameras, offering improved image quality and higher resolution. When combined with a callbox, multi-sensor panoramic cameras deliver
180- to 360-degree coverage for continuous situational awareness. Live and forensic video from the camera details the entire scope of incident from start to finish. Multi-sensor megapixel cameras can also be mounted on walls, poles or other structures to provide additional 180 - to 360 - degree fields of view where call boxes are not appropriate. Others can be mounted on the corners of buildings to deliver a 270 - degree arc of coverage from three of the sensors while the fourth points straight down to eliminate any blind spot. A standard single-sensor camera provides a more restrictive fixed field of view. A PTZ camera requires either a live operator or to be on a programmed schedule of the area covered. Both choices can result in key aspects of the incident not being captured on camera. 

Another aspect of the survey was the restrictions of a typical campus security budget. Many participants reported a lack of funding for the enhanced video surveillance that they require today. Integration of call boxes with video can help address these issues. While a new emergency callbox can be purchased with a multiĀ­ sensor surveillance camera, existing call boxes can be upgraded even more affordably. Most call boxes have space on top or inside that can be used for the camera with the provision of a simple bracket. Many call boxes are already equipped with an IP connection for system requirements and for future enhancements including camera integration. With new or existing callbox infrastructure, the addition of a multi-sensor panoramic camera addresses many of the top needs and challenges identified in this survey, while delivering enhanced situational awareness. Fewer cameras are required to be installed, managed and maintained, with improved video and at less cost. The result is a better, more affordable security solution for schools, colleges and corporate campuses.
