Hi. I’m Larry Heisler, Director of Marketing for Global Building Technology Solutions, and this Knowledge Drop video covers new FCC rules to improve wireless coverage through the use of signal boosters.


In early 2013, the FCC adopted new rules that improve signal booster design so they won’t interfere with wireless networks. The new rules also lay out what cell phone users need to do before using a signal booster.


The new rules establish two types of signal boosters: consumer and industrial.


The signal strength of consumer signal boosters is relatively weak. It can cover your average home or car, but that’s about it. The FCC does not require a carrier authorized installer for the consumer boosters because they don’t have enough signal to interfere with the carrier’s signals. Industrial signal boosters are used in high-occupancy areas such as office buildings, airports or stadiums. They have a much stronger signal and have the potential to interfere with the carrier’s signal. The new FCC rules require industrial signal boosters to be installed by FCC licensees or qualified installers. The operation of these boosters will still require a valid FCC license or express consent of the spectrum licensee, for example your wireless carrier.


Although signal boosters can help to improve wireless coverage, poorly designed, improperly installed or malfunctioning signal boosters can interfere with wireless networks or cause interference to a range of calls.
