Operational Sustainability – Making a Difference

Operational Sustainability – Making a Difference

The Operational Sustainability program is part of CommScope’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CR&S) organization. The goal of Operational Sustainability is to deliver business value and benefit with effective operating principles to reduce the environmental impact of CommScope operations and facilities.

2019 was a year of consolidation, discovery and transformation for CommScope’s Sustainability strategy. Two substantial portfolios were combined into a single integrated and unified portfolio for sustainability improvement and reporting purposes. Throughout this time, Commscope continued to improve the environmental performance of the operations, including cutting 2019 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by nearly 3%, water withdrawal by 2.5%, and diverted 83% of non-hazardous waste from landfill.

In 2020, CommScope plan to further build on the great work they have started to deliver several critical Operational Sustainability goals. These include:

Investing in Our Future
  • Reduce 2019 energy consumption by 2% by the end of 2020.
  • Reduce 2019 GHG emissions by 2% by the end of 2020.
  • Develop long-term GHG emissions reduction targets.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage the benefits of renewable energy across operations.
  • Ensure beneficial reuse (BRE) of waste exceeds 90% by the end of 2020.
  • Ensure water use meets global water industrial consumption limits.

2020 Implementation Projects

As part of the new Sustainability strategy, CommScope recently completed a Renewable Energy Feasibility Study. The study objective was to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the CommScope facilities for renewable energy opportunities. This allows to understand implementation feasibility of renewable energy projects and sites with the highest potential to meet CommScope’s future CR&S initiatives and Science Based Targets (SBT). As a next step, they will complete a cost-benefit analysis of each alternative renewable energy source on a site by site basis. This process will define what is possible and drive the decision process for our long-term goals.

Improving CommScope’s operational sustainability performance relies on a great team built on innovation, passion and commitment, at CommScope we have these in abundance - the CR&S Operational Sustainability team partners with the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Continuous Improvement and facility teams to implement projects and programs to achieve these objectives. In mid-2020, the Continuous Improvement, EHS, CR&S and facility teams identified over 100 possible projects with potential cost and GHG emissions reduction opportunities. Looking forward to following the process to select and implement these projects, a further update will be provided in the 2020 Sustainability Report.
