40 Gigabit Ethernet Over Copper Video Transcript

Hi, I’m Andy Jimenez, Vice President of Technology at Anixter. In this Knowledge Drop video, I would like to talk about 40 Gigabit Ethernet over a copper structured cabling system.

Today, any server or storage appliance requiring more than 10 Gigabit of bandwidth has to use fiber to get to 40 Gigabit Ethernet. However, there are many users who would prefer to stay with a twisted-pair copper infrastructure for these connections. The combination of twisted-pair Ethernet’s low-cost, high availability, structured topology, common physical interface, and auto negotiation capabilities makes it an attractive option for the transmission of data and low-voltage power in office and data center application environments when compared to other available interconnect technologies.

The IEEE is currently working on a standard for 40GBASE-T or 40 Gigabit Ethernet over twisted-pair cabling. Also the TIA is currently working on 568-C.2-1 to create a Category 8 cable that can be used for 40GBASE-T infrastructures.

Both standards are still under development but so far it looks like the cabling will be an F/UTP or foiled UTP. Also connector types other than the common RJ45 are being considered. Also the channel length will be at least 30 meters. That should be long enough for most data center applications.

The TIA has created a new taskforce to identify, analyze and recommend use cases like switch fabric architectures, end-of-row, and top-of-rack for high-performance structured cabling application environments utilizing technologies such as 40GBASE-T.

I am honored to have been selected as the chair of this task force. We will be working hard to create a technical service bulletin or TSB under 42.7 subcommittee, which can be used today when designing networks and facilities for high-speed applications, including 40GBASE-T.
