Life Care - Gaynes Park Manor is a 96-bed aged care facility in Adelaide, Australia. Gaynes Park Manor has a unique design where residents live in small communities of about eight people, which is centred around a dedicated communal kitchen, dining, lounge and activity area.
Keeping Up With Evolving Technology
As extra-low-voltage (ELV) services—such as security, HVAC, access control and fire, life and safety—migrate from old electromechanical and pneumatic technology to new IoT systems, infrastructure for these services must be designed in a way that allows traditional services to run today, but is flexible enough to allow these services to migrate to IP-integrated solutions in the future.
Given this evolving connectivity landscape, Life Care was challenged with integrating the growing wireless requirements and the increasing number and types of networked devices into the core network. They needed a solution to deploy a uniform, flexible cabling infrastructure throughout the facility.
Designing a System Today for the Needs of Tomorrow
After meeting with Life Care and learning the complex details of their day-to-day operations, Anixter designed a tailored common cabling platform for all ELV infrastructure services, including nurse paging, access control, CCTV, data, voice and building management. The cabling infrastructure Anixter designed is essentially “plug and play,” giving Life Care the flexibility to incorporate the latest assistive technology for their customers and upgrade to new technology as it is developed.
Along with the design, Anixter provided a standards-based structured cabling guideline document that allowed Life Care to go to tender for the solution. The design consisted of a cross-connect design in the floor distributors with consolidation points mounted in the ceilings on the floor plates each with dedicated zones, and by consolidating the horizontal pathways for all their ELV systems gives them the flexibility and redundancy they needed to be able to manage their operational budget in the future. Having the cross-connect design for the cabling infrastructure allows each service to work independently of each other as all fields are colour-coded for easy identification. Life Care owns the cabling infrastructure and the services will come and go as needed. They are not locked in to any service and can reuse the cabling infrastructure as the cabling is common to all the ELV services.
A Complete, Cost-effective Solution
The key to success on this project was early planning. By meeting with Life Care early in the process to discuss current and future needs, Anixter came up with this unique, flexible design. This also made the solution more cost-effective, since bidding and designing the systems (voice, data, nurse call, security, HVAC, etc.) separately would increase cable delivery costs and decrease flexibility.
As Life Care moves towards mixed-use rooms and apartments, Anixter’s standards guidelines will give them more control over the building services while enabling them to incorporate technology on an apartment-by-apartment basis and better link their services across portfolios. Thanks to Anixter, Life Care is better able to serve its current residents and easily adapt to their and future residents’ needs.
