The Importance of Video Compression Transcript

Hi, I’m Matt Powers. I want to talk to you about video compression. Video compression is the process of encoding a video stream by using less bits than the original representation. Without video compression, supporting video surveillance on a network would be virtually impossible. An uncompressed video stream can take up as much as 100 MB per second if not more.


Video compression builds efficiencies in data transmission and storage, allowing us to store more video from more cameras on a network and to achieve higher resolution.


Today, the most common video compression algorithm is H.264 or the advanced video coding algorithm. With H.264, supporting video on a local area network is not an issue as long as cameras are properly managed.


In the future, we hope to eliminate issues such as the wide area network and transmitting video across that wide area network. Today, that’s the challenge that we all face within video surveillance. Hopefully, future compressions such as H.265 or the high-efficiency video coding algorithm will address those challenges that we have in the wide area network and build more efficiencies in data transmission and storage.


In the future, we hope to see applications such as hosted video and high-resolution cameras to support our critical video networks.
